PREOPERATIVE COLON SURGERY INSTRUCTIONS

2 DAYS BEFORE SURGERY:
During the day it is better to eat lightly (soup, salad, fruits, cereal, rice) and be sure to DRINK PLENTY OF WATER! Do not eat heavy meats, bread, pasta, cheese or peanut butter. No more solid food after 5 PM.

AFTER 5PM:
Have a clear liquid supper which includes broth, jello, coffee, tea, clear fruit juice (apple or cranberry). NO SOLID FOODS OR MILK PRODUCTS. NO ALCOHOL DURING THIS TIME.

6PM:
Chew one Simethicone Gas Tablet. You may drink water with this but the tablet must be chewed!

7PM:
Drink 1.5 Oz. (half the bottle) of Fleets Phosphasoda mixed with 4 ounces of water. Add ice and keep it chilled. You may sip this through a straw to get it past your taste buds. You must DRINK SLOWLY or it will upset your stomach. You have 15 minutes to drink the mixture. We suggest sipping the Fleets Phosphasoda mix then chasing it with either juice or water.

Throughout the rest of the evening drink at least three 8 ounce glasses of water or fruit juice. If you can, drink more (preferably water).

9PM:
Chew the second Simethicone Gas Tablet.


THE DAY BEFORE SURGERY:
NO SOLID FOODS OR MILK PRODUCTS ON THIS DAY.

8AM:
Drink the second half of the Fleets Phosphasoda as per the above instructions.

10AM:
Chew another Simethicone Gas Tablet.

Throughout the rest of the day drink plenty of clear liquids (water, clear juice, etc.).

1 PM:
Take 1 Neomycin tablet and 1 Erythromycin tablet with a small sip of clear liquid.

2PM:
Take 1 Neomycin tablet and 1 Erythromycin tablet with a small sip of clear liquid.

10 PM:
Take 1 Neomycin tablet and 1 Erythromycin tablet with a small sip of clear liquid.

NOTHING TO EAT OR DRINK AFTER MIDNIGHT


THE DAY OF SURGERY:
You will be given the time to report to the hospital. You may take your morning medications with a sip of water if they relate to heart disease, blood pressure or seizures.
